What Is an ARC Flash?

The occurrence of an arc flash, an abrupt release of electrical energy that travels through the air due to an arcing fault, poses one of the most perilous hazards in any workplace. Shockingly, arc flashes lead to hundreds of fatalities and thousands of injuries annually. Essentially, an arc flash manifests as an unexpected outburst of electrical energy through the air, arising from arcing faults between conductors, whether phase-to-phase, phase-to-neutral, or phase-to-ground.

When an arc flash takes place, it emits both intense light and thermal radiation, characterized by scorching temperatures. In fact, recorded arc flash temperatures have soared to a staggering 35,000˚F, an extreme heat capable of melting and vaporizing metals. Furthermore, it can ignite clothing and inflict fatal burns at distances reaching up to 10 feet. Shockingly, the United States alone experiences arc flash incidents 5 to 10 times every day, underscoring the critical need for awareness and preventive measures in the workplace.
